A few words about
Food Security & Livelihoods
Empowering the Next Generation of Change-Makers
We address the pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, and economic instability by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, improving access to resources, and creating resilient livelihoods to combat the region’s ongoing food insecurity crisis.
At Community Voice Alliance (CVA), we recognize the deep, ongoing challenges faced by communities across East Africa and Africa as a whole in securing food, livelihoods, and economic stability. The stark reality is that millions of individuals, particularly in the most vulnerable regions, continue to experience food insecurity at alarming rates. This situation is further exacerbated by climate change, conflict, economic instability, and poor governance, all of which create a complex and ever-growing crisis. These factors are also driving cycles of poverty and inequality, undermining the future prospects of entire populations.
Food security is a fundamental pillar for ensuring healthy, thriving communities and is inextricably linked to livelihoods—the ability of individuals to support themselves and their families through sustainable, diverse, and income-generating activities. Yet, across much of Africa, food security remains elusive, as many communities face barriers that prevent them from accessing affordable, nutritious, and stable sources of food.
The Crisis of Food Security and Livelihoods in East Africa and Africa
The challenge of achieving food security and strengthening livelihoods is particularly pressing in East Africa, where countries such as Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda are among the most affected by food crises. These regions experience droughts, flooding, crop failures, and conflict that undermine agricultural productivity and disrupt local economies. As of recent reports, over 60 million people in East Africa face acute food insecurity, while millions more across the African continent endure chronic hunger due to structural factors, including poor infrastructure, inadequate market access, and a lack of support for smallholder farmers.
The hard food security issues faced by East African and African populations include:
Recurring droughts and erratic rainfall patterns, which heavily impact rain-fed agriculture that millions depend on.
Conflict and displacement, which disrupt livelihoods, especially in conflict zones where agricultural activities and market systems are destroyed.
Rising food prices driven by global economic factors, supply chain disruptions, and climate-related crop failures, making food unaffordable for many.
Inadequate access to technology, knowledge, and infrastructure to improve agricultural productivity and ensure food stability in rural areas.
In the face of these challenges, it is critical to address the root causes of food insecurity and livelihood vulnerability, including the need for greater climate resilience, improved agricultural practices, policy reforms, and economic diversification for communities in East Africa and across the African continent.
Why Food Security and Livelihoods Matter for East Africa and Africa
Food insecurity and fragile livelihoods are not isolated issues—they are directly linked to poverty, migration, health crises, and social instability. The consequences of food insecurity go beyond hunger; they extend to a deeper impact on health, education, and economic development. Here’s why food security and livelihoods matter:
Health and Nutrition: Food insecurity contributes directly to malnutrition, stunted growth, disease vulnerability, and poor educational outcomes, especially for children and women.
Economic Stability: Insecure food systems disrupt local economies by affecting agricultural productivity, reducing household income, and limiting trade. Vulnerable communities often lack access to stable markets or alternative sources of income, further entrenched in poverty.
Peace and Stability: Food scarcity often leads to social unrest and conflict, particularly in regions where competition for resources is high and access to food becomes a source of tension.
Climate Change: The increasing frequency and severity of climate-related events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves place immense stress on agriculture-based livelihoods in East Africa and Africa at large.
At Community Voice Alliance (CVA), we believe that food security and livelihood resilience are at the heart of development. We are determined to help communities in East Africa and throughout Africa face the challenges of food insecurity, overcome poverty, and build sustainable livelihoods that can withstand the shocks of climate change and economic instability. Through our focused, community-centered programs and partnerships, we aim to create lasting, transformative change that empowers individuals, strengthens economies, and contributes to regional stability and peace.
